Since the mid-1980s, Pictionary has been entertaining party-goers by putting their drawing and guessing skills to the test. Talented artists do not always have an edge in the game, especially when given obscure and challenging words. While the game comes with its own lists of words, you will quickly exhaust those lists if you play the game often. Adding your own words can keep the game fresh for all players.
Pictionary Categories
In the standard version of Pictionary, there are five main categories:
- Person/Place/Animal
- Object
- Action
- Difficult (words that are hard to draw)
- All Play (typically easier words that can be guessed by either team)

Special Word Lists
People have taken the idea of Pictionary to form their own games for special events and theme days. Schools often use Pictionary-style words to teach vocabulary words effectively to their students. Pictionary words related to weddings, honeymoons and married life are popular at bridal showers and rehearsal dinners. You can also come up with your own Pictionary words for slumber parties, baby showers, road trips, and any other get together you can think of. The game is simple, and can be easily customized to the grammar level of the players, especially if you create your own. Or, you can outwit each other by using a dictionary for obscure words and their definitions.
